Penyebaran Kristen di Goa

Penduduk pribumi dari koloni Portugis Goa mulai berpindah ke agama Kristen dalam skala besar setelah penaklukan dan pendudukan-nya oleh Kekaisaran Portugis, yang dipimpin oleh Laksamana Afonso de Albuquerque pada 1510. Setelah berpindah ke Katolik Roma, mereka biasanya diberi kewarganegaraan Portugis.^[1] Hampir seluruh umat Katolik Goa pada masa sekarang adalah keturunan dari penduduk lokal yang berpindah ke agama tersebut. Mereka membentuk komunitas Kristen terbesar di Goa dan melingkungi 25 persen dari total populasi Katolik di India.^[2] Komunitas Katolik Mangalore dan Katolik Karwari dari negara bagian India Karnataka juga sebagian besar merupakan keturunan dari penduduk Goa yang berpindah agama.^[3]

Perpindahan ke agama Kristen

Pada pertengahan abad ke-16, koloni Portugis Goa, khususnya kota Goa, menjadi pusat Kristenisasi di dunia Timur.^[4] Kristenisasi di Goa sebagian besar terbatas pada empat concelho (distrik) Bardez, Mormugao, Salcette, dan Tiswadi.^[5] Selain itu, aktivitas penginjilan dibagi pada 1555 oleh viceroy Portugis Goa, Pedro Mascarenhas.^[6]
