Plethodon – rodzaj płazów ogoniastych z podrodziny Plethodontinae w rodzinie bezpłucnikowatych (Plethodontidae). Należy do najstarszych Plethodontidae – skamieniałości płazów należących do tego rodzaju są znane już z oligoceńskich osadów w stanie Montana[6].

Zasięg występowania

Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące w południowo-wschodniej i południowo-zachodniej Kanadzie, zachodnich i wschodnich Stanach Zjednoczonych, ale nieobecne w regionie Wielkich Równin; jedna populacja występuje w południowych Górach Skalistych w Nowym Meksyku[7].

Systematyka

Etymologia

  • Plethodon: gr. πληθω plēthō „być pełnym”[8]; οδους odous, οδοντος odontos „ząb”[9].
  • Sauropsis (Saurophis): gr. σαυρος sauros „jaszczurka”[10]; οψις opsis „wygląd”[11]. Gatunek typowy: Salamandra erythronota Rafinesque, 1818 (= Salamandra cinerea Green, 1818).
  • Hightonia: Richard Highton (ur. 1927), amerykański herpetolog[5]. Gatunek typowy: Ambystoma vehiculum Cooper, 1869.
