Ciklus snova

Ciklus snova (engleski: Dream Cycle) je naziv za jedan od tri velika ciklusa u opusu H. P. Lovecrafta, američkog pisca horor priča.[1] Uz tzv. makabristične priče i Cthulhu mitove, Ciklus snova sačinjava suštinu Lovecraftova opusa, a sastoji se od serije kratkih priča i novelā. Djela iz ovog ciklusa nastajala su od otprilike 1920. godine pa sve do 30-ih godina, a u svom totalitetu uključuju i djela što ih je Lovecraft pisao s drugim autorima. Zajedničke karakteristike djela iz Ciklusa snova su:

  • unikatni panteon zemaljskih božanstava znanih kao Drevni bogovi i Vanjski bogovi;
  • zajednički lokus, Zemlja snova, koji uključuje često korištene lokacije poput Ulthara i Celephaïsa;
  • likovi koji se više puta pojavljuju u pričama, kao što su Randolph Carter, Richard Pickman i fiktivni monarh Kuranes.

Djela iz Ciklusa snova spadaju u ranija djela H. P. Lovecrafta, a primarna inspiracija za ciklus bio je Lord Dunsany, Lovecraftov prijatelj, koji je u svojim djelima koristio vrlo sličnu tematiku. Iako se Ciklus snova danas smatra zasebnim dijelom Lovecraftovog opusa i zasebnim univerzumom, on ima značajne veze s Cthulhu mitovima; neki teoretičari su, zbog eksplicitnih i implicitnih veza u kasnim djelima iz Ciklusa snova, skloni ovaj ciklus smatrati manjim dijelom Cthulhu mitova. Neki od likova, posebice Randolph Carter, pojavljuju se u djelima iz oba serijala, a međusobne reference prisutne su, također, u pričama iz oba serijala.

Iako je sadržaj Ciklusa snova više-manje jasan, s obzirom da se priče mogu odrediti stilski i kronološki, postoje neki prijelazni radovi iz različitih vremenskih perioda, koji zbog stilskih specifičnosti i referenci otežavaju klasifikaciju.

Sadržaj

Godine 1985., izdavačka kuća Del Rey Books izdala je zbirku The Dream Cycle of H. P. Lovecraft: Dreams of Terror and Death, koja sadrži djela koja sačinjavaju sukus Ciklusa snova, bili da se radi o direktnim poveznicama, ili samo implikacijama.[2][3] Zbirka je sadrži Lovecraftova samostalna djela, ali i suradnje koje spadaju u serijal:
