Radnja predstavlja prikaz izgradnje američke Transkontinentalne željeznice, odnosno pruge kojom su se 1869. spojile Zapadna i Istočna obala SAD. Protagonist je mladi prospektor koji 1860-ih u divljini nastoji pronaći što kraću i pogodniju trasu, a u čemu će ga neće spriječiti ni Indijanci koji su mu ubili oca. The Iron Horse se smatra jednim od prvih epskih vesterna u Fordovoj karijeri; snimao ga je na svojoj omiljenoj lokaciji Monument Valley u Utahu zajedno sa hiljadama statista radi čijeg smještaja su podignuta privremena naselja. The Iron Horse je, slično kao i The Covered Wagon prethodne godine, značajno uticao na kasnije vesterne uspostavivši neslužbeni hollywoodski "kanon" Divljeg Zapada.
